AI in The Classroom
AI is a computerized tool that tries to simulate the human thought process and generate answers to questions based on that. A person will ask the AI tool a question, and it will generate a response using online resources filtered through an algorithm. This generates human-like responses to questions and the AI will then go on to filter the response even more after additional inputs or commands.
A potential benefit to AI is the way that it can enhance in-class learning and activities that are done in a class. It can be used to help carry out preliminary research on a topic easily and can give summaries for different readings easily and quickly allowing students that may have not understood the full reading to still understand the main points.
A potential negative consequence of AI is that students can use it to cheat and take shortcuts in the learning process. Instead of trying to understand a whole text, they could use AI to tell them. They could also use it to generate answers for class without even trying to figure it out themselves. This leads them to never fully grasping a topic and is a big danger with AI.
At this point, I believe that I will try to incorporate AI into my future classroom. It is going to be part of the future and it is not going away, so because of that, we need to teach students to learn how to use AI safely, correctly, and ethically. Students shouldn't be able to let AI do everything for them, because this develops a reliance on it and this should not be the case. AI should be used to enhance learning. And, it should not be used to cheat the learning process or replace part of the learning process. AI needs to be in the classroom because students are going to use it no matter what, but if we incorporate it, at least teachers can somewhat control the use of it, and teach how to correctly and ethically use it.
